WELCOME CONTENTS “No tweed, wicker baskets or trousers tucked into socks. Just a free digital magazine aimed at the fly fishing punk” 12 6 10 COMPETING FOR THE PRIZE James explains why he caught the fishing bug, and looks forward to more overseas adventures RAKART The story behind the vivid images and off the wall designs of Rakart Welcome to the first issue of Fly Punk. As this is the first issue I had better start by introducing the team behind Fly Punk (there’s only 2 of us!). Myself – Richard – I have been fly fishing for over 10 years and concentrate on fishing rivers for wild Brown Trout, but my real passion is for Grayling. I started a company called Barbless Flies (www. here in the UK about 4 years ago and through this have made lots of good friends – many of whom you will read about through the pages of this magazine (we had to start somewhere!). Emilia Laitinen ― SOME ADVENTURES IN LAPLAND 12 16 18 GRAYLING ADVENTURES IN LAPLAND Grayling fishing at the top of the world, Emilia explains why. BROTHERHOOD OF THE BEND Join the brotherhood and worship on the water’s edge. WHY DO I LOVE FLY FISHING SO MUCH? Axel explains the allure of fly fishing for him. And – Jack: Our design and marketing guru. Jack brings a youthful touch to the magazine and website, and I hope something a little different to the fly fishing audience. Me fishing the local chalk streams in south west England 22 IN SEARCH OF SILK A custom built glass rod with a unique reel seat. Richard talks us through the search for silk. We all know that fly fishing is perceived to be an “old man’s” game, but here at Fly Punk we don’t believe a word of it. We have searched out the younger generation of fly fishers from around the world who have interesting stories to tell and pictures to share. These are the people who will push the boundaries and will re-define the art/sport of fly fishing for future generations. This first issue will take you on a trip around the world, from the west coast of America to Sweden/Norway and beyond. We have included articles on some innovative rod building and some fantastic art. If you like things a little different I’m sure you will find something that “floats your boat” included in the coming pages. 24 28 FORENSIC FLY FISHING Two guys, one passion. Why do they do it? MY FISHING STORY “You’ll never meet a fly fisher you don’t like”. Matthew explains about his passion for fly fishing. I don’t want to make assumptions, but if you are like me, then when you are not fishing, you are either thinking about it or reading about it (hence why you're reading this). This magazine does not go into the “how to fish” – there’s plenty of other resources for that (and we are no experts!). We have tried to concentrate on the “why we fish” – we think this is a much more interesting question. As always things evolve, and this magazine is no different. If you think you have a story to tell – something that is innovative, out of the ordinary or just plain funny, please jot it down and send it in to us (email address below). We are always looking for articles and features – so long as it relates to fly fishing and conforms to the “why we fish” ethos we will include it. We decided to make this magazine a free publication to try and reach as wide an audience as possible. If you don’t like it – please tell us why, if you do like it – please tell us – we like a pat on the back every now and then! 30 34 36 37 WHO SAID FLY FISHING IS BORING From Montenegro to Mongolia Stan is never far from a river. THE BENS WHO BUILD Glass is not dead, some innovative rod building from The Netherlands. VIDEO WALL Here’s some of the videos which caught our attention this month. Check out the stunning “River Keeper”. PODCASTS A real treat for your ears, our current favourite podcasts. Great listening. 28 Matthew Wright― MY FISHING STORY Anyway, please enjoy the first issue – there’s a fly punk in all of us … Editors Jack Fieldhouse Richard Fieldhouse Advertinsing Editor Richard Fieldhouse Creative Director Jack Fieldhouse Executive Contributor Richard Fieldhouse Photo Editor Jack Fieldhouse Features Editor Richard Fieldhouse Lead Designer Jack Fieldhouse 2 | 3 © 2016
